Water Filters

Brita Brand

Consumers can drop off their used, dry Brita pitcher filters at participating Whole Foods Market stores or mail them directly to Preserve. Full details and instructions on both options, including a complete list of stores, will be available at www.brita.com in early January 2009.

  • Drop off: Through the Preserve Gimme 5 program, select Whole Foods Market stores will begin collecting No. 5 plastics and used Brita pitcher filters.

  • Mail in: Consumers who wish to mail in used Brita pitcher filters are encouraged to package the filter in a small, used box and send it via ground shipping. The box will also be recycled by Preserve.

Mercury-containing water filters

Some water filters contain a UV light, used to kill bacteria in water. The bulb used in this process may contain mercury, so it should not be disposed of in the trash. UV-bulb-containing filters can be disposed of at no cost to homeowners through the Household Hazardous Waste Program.

GE appliance water filter recycling program
The GE water filter recycling program is designed to recycle 100 percent of the refrigerator water filter. The plastic part of the product is "pelletized" and re-used and the charcoal filter is re-used in landfill liners that help prevent substances from leaching into local water supplies. When you order a replacement water filter from GE, you'll receive a free recycling kit for your used GE water filter. The kit includes a pre-paid mailing label and envelope.

To order your GE replacement water filter and receive your free recycling kit, visit www.geapplianceparts.com or call (877) 690-7115.

The eSpring® Water Purifier filter from Amway contains a small ultraviolet bulb that contains mercury. These filters are accepted as household hazardous waste in Kent County.
